Seattle Schools parents rally outside district headquarters in protest of closures

Ahead of Wednesday's Seattle Public Schools board meeting, parents and community members held a rally outside the district headquarters.

Community members and parents of Seattle Public Schools students rallied outside of district offices ahead of a board meeting opposing possible school closures on Sept. 18, 2024.

SPS pitched potential elementary school closures for the next school year to help save millions of dollars amid its budget crisis totaling an estimated $100 million. "This is basically trying to make do with too little money and making it worse for everybody," Andy Brauninger said. In proposed Option A, students in grades 6-8 who currently attend K-8 schools will be served at their attendance area middle schools, according to SPS. The district also noted that option A includes transition to attendance area elementary schools.Licton Springs , North Beach, Broadview-Thomson , Green Lake, Decatur, Cedar Park, Laurelhurst, Catharine Blaine , John Hay, McGilvra, Stevens, Thurgood Marshall, Orca , Graham Hill, Rainier View, Louisa Boren , and Sanislo.
