A Seattle school bus driver is hailed as a hero after a chunk of metal pierced the windshield of his bus, injuring him but ensuring the safety of his young passengers. John O'Leary, the driver, calmly navigated the bus to a safe stop despite his injuries and returned to work just a week later.
A Seattle area school bus driver is being lauded for his quick thinking and composure after a chunk of metal crashed through the windshield of his bus, injuring him while he was driving. O'Leary, the bus driver, sustained injuries including glass cuts to his face and a severe bruise to his chest, yet he managed to maintain control of the bus. Remarkably, he returned to work less than a week later. 'I'm glad it was me, not them.
Any of my passengers,' O'Leary shared with KOMO, reflecting on the harrowing experience. 'I knew I was going to be ok. It certainly could have gone a different way, fractions of a second things can change,' he added. O'Leary captured a picture as he was being transported to the ambulance, showing reporters 'They were pulling glass out of my face, and had some gauze on there to mop me up a little.' His colleagues have expressed their admiration by displaying signs in his honor. Tammy Ayers from Teamsters 763 praised O'Leary, stating, 'He never wavered, he kept his hands on the steering wheel and his first priority was the kids.' The windshield from the incident is now on display in the bus office, and O'Leary gets to keep the piece of metal that caused the commotion. Although the origin of the metal remains unknown, O'Leary is resolute about his role in the situation. 'I kept the girls safe. That's what the job of a bus driver is, transporting students safely and I did that and I'm pretty happy about that. None of them got hurt,' he told the station.
