Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) offers tips on preventing frozen pipes during cold weather. They recommend covering outdoor faucets, keeping faucets running slightly, and opening cupboards to allow warm air to circulate. SPU also advises finding the main water shut-off valve for quick action in case of a burst pipe.
“The ice really freezes them up and the pipes start to expand because water takes up a lot more space once it’s frozen, and then pop, there you go, you’ve got a leak in your house or outside,” said Chad Buechler, emergency manager with Seattle Public Utilities .Another tip from SPU is to keep faucets running slightly to keep water flowing and prevent freezing.
“Even inside the house," Buechler said. "Especially on those exterior walls it can get a lot colder, so open up those cupboards, even that small drip can help out." You also want to find out now where the main water cutoff to your home is, SPU advised. That way if a pipe bursts, you can try and minimize the damage. SPU said the shut-off valve can be indoors or outdoors, usually in a basement, crawl space or garage. If you do have frozen pipes burst, SPU said you should close the main shut-off valve right away to stop flooding.
Never try to warm a frozen pipe with a flame. It can cause the water inside to boil and the pipe to explode. You can apply heat to a frozen pipe using towels soaked in hot water wrapped around the pipe, an electric heating pad or an electric hair dryer.
