Seattle students were welcomed back to the classroom Wednesday with more school security and counselors.

Police identified 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at Apalachee High School, as the gunman who killed two students and two teachers.

“It takes us all to have and be in a safe environment,” stated Marty Jackson, the Southeast Network Executive Director with the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County, as she and staff stood outside Rainier Beach High School. “I feel like it's not going to affect me. And then also, as a person of color, I feel like not a lot of people of color will feel comfortable,” she explained. Jackson works to better connect with students as part of Safe Passage through the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County, also called the Blue Coats.

Similarly, reps with Community Passageways wearing neon yellow are often walking around the schools and helping with violence intervention to make everyone feel safer.“Part of these connections help us to build a safety net that allows for kids not to fall through the cracks or to feel like outcasts in their communities,” Jackson added.
