Mayor Bruce Harrell proposed emergency legislation Thursday aimed at reducing vacant building fires in Seattle.

The Seattle Fire Department responds to a vacant-building fire along Rainier Avenue South in Seattle 's Mt. Baker neighborhood on Nov. 28, 2023.

Numbers from the mayor's office show there were 77 vacant building fires in 2021, 91 in 2022 and 130 in 2023. There were already 30 this year heading into this week, Harrell's office said. The SFD said it's identified more than 40 vacant buildings citywide that are potentially impacted by this legislation, and it estimates up to 10 properties "may be addressed by this legislation each year."
