A possible vote to amend a controversial law meant to ensure a minimum wage for app-based workers in Seattle will be taken up by the Seattle City Council.

Since the pay ordinance went into effect in January, many restaurants and drivers have told KOMO News it has backfired and led to fewer customers placing orders.

The law that went into effect requires delivery workers to make $26.40 an hour plus mileage before tips.FROM APRIL 25 |The Seattle City Council is considering revisions to the current law, in which workers would get paid just under $20 an hour plus 35 cents a mile. Others have argued the problem lies not with the existing law, but with companies like DoorDash, adding a $5 fee on every Seattle customer's order to make up operating costs, the company said.KOMO News reached out to Grubhub for comment on the possible changes.

“Seattle’s extreme pay ordinance was flawed from the start," a spokesperson said. "We applaud the City Council for working swiftly to fix the law and make it work better for drivers, restaurants and diners in their city.” The City Council committee will review and vote on any amendments at 2 p.m. before the legislation goes before a full council vote on May 21.
