, a one-year-old North American river otter, to his new home alongside 13-year-old Molalla in the aquarium’s river otter habitat. Aquarium staff worked closely with Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, New York, to coordinate the transfer.

Earlier this month, Seattle Aquarium Bird and Mammal Curator Veronica Seawall and veterinarian Dr. Sasha Troiano traveled to Rochester to accompany Zweigle during his cross-country move to the Pacific Northwest.

“This transfer reflects the strong collaboration between the Seattle Aquarium and Seneca Park Zoo, ensuring a smooth transition for Zweigle,” Seawall said. “Moves like this are only possible through the meaningful partnerships built across AZA-accredited institutions. ” Zweigle was born at Seneca Park Zoo alongside siblings Mystie and Ivey, marking the first North American river otters born at the zoo.

The births were significant because the species became locally extinct in western New York during the 1900s due to trapping, pollution, and habitat destruction. Conservation and reintroduction efforts that began in the 1990s have helped restore otter populations in the region. As part of those broader efforts, Zweigle and his siblings are being relocated to accredited zoos and aquariums across the country.
