Low visibility and strong currents made the rain-swollen river too dangerous for dive teams.
The 19-year old was swimming in theat about 8 p.m. on Thursday when friends he was swimming with told park rangers he began to struggle with the current and went under, the parks service said in an update on Sunday. It was the third full day of the search.
The park service said the water level was 2 to 3 feet above normal in the Karamac area where the group was swimming, near the New Jersey bank just north of Interstate 80 in Warren County. The high water level has made the river unsafe for dive teams, increasing the current and reducing visibility, the park service said. So, searchers have been scanning the river from boats and using sonar to detect anomalies beneath the surface over a five-mile stretch downstream from where the swimmer was last seen.
