Raymond Shaw says he has spent the past five-and-a-half weeks uncovering and exploring disused mine shafts in a determined effort to find anything that helps locate the Ballarat mum.
Raymond Shaw says he has explored about 60 disused mineshafts since Samantha Murphy went missing.He describes exploring the disused underground holes and tunnels as a "hobby gone wild", having recorded the locations of about 75,000 across Victoria in a decade.
it is entirely feasible illegal mining activity once took place in Ballarat, given its prominent role in the gold rush, making it impossible to now know the location of every shaft. He said he usually went into the bush in his four-wheel drive, searched on foot and then set up to abseil in. Victoria Police would not confirm whether or not mine shafts formed part of the search for Ms Murphy.
