Before nabbing an Oscar for a supporting role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Best Picture winner One Battle After Another, Sean Penn played an aging Hollywood actor in the same director’s nostalgic 2021 movie Licorice Pizza, a film whose stacked cast also included Bradley Cooper as famed movie producer Jon Peters. Five years on from that memorable convergence of Hollywood luminaries, Penn and Cooper will reportedly re-team at Warner Bros. for a sure-to-be-controversial thriller movie with ties to January 6 .
Cooper is set to play the lead in the untitled project, which will cover the early life of a cop who was present at the Capitol during the historic events that transpired on Jan. 6, 2021. Penn is set to direct the film, described as an “unexpected story about friendship.
” A possible sticking point for the project down the road: WB may soon be sold to Paramount Skydance, whose CEO David Ellison has strong ties to Donald Trump, a president Penn has called “an enemy of mankind. ” The movie Penn is set to direct, with Cooper as star, reportedly has only an indirect connection to January 6.
