Mary Kay Cabot reveals front office history with McDermott dating back to 2016, when Browns brass 'loved' him before ownership overruled them for Hue Jackson.
' ongoing coaching search, former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has suddenly become available after being fired Monday. On the latest episode of the“Back in 2016, the top brass loved Sean McDermott here and that was Paul DePodesta, Sashi Brown and Andrew Berry.
That was the kind of power triumvirate at the time,” Cabot explained on the podcast. “They loved Sean McDermott, but they were kind of overruled by the Haslams. They fell in love with Hue Jackson.” That decision proved consequential for both franchises. While the Browns went 1-31 under Jackson over the next two seasons, McDermott landed in Buffalo the following year and transformed the Bills into a perennial contender. Under his leadership, Buffalo made the playoffs eight times, including two AFC Championship appearances. Given this history and the Browns’ methodical approach to their current coaching search, Cabot believes the team will at minimum explore McDermott’s interest. “I think they will at least call about Sean McDermott. And the reason why I think that is because most of the other head coaches that have become available, they have at least inquired about,” she said. The timing creates an interesting opportunity for the Browns, who are currently conducting second interviews with candidates like Jim Schwartz, Todd Monken and Mike McDaniel. As podcast host Dan Labbe pointed out, the Browns haven’t reached a point where they must commit to any candidate. “I think you have to be able to pivot when something like this happens and a guy becomes available,” Labbe said. “That’s one of the benefits of having not hired someone.” McDermott’s track record in Buffalo is particularly impressive considering the franchise’s state when he arrived. Like the Browns, the Bills had endured a lengthy playoff drought, having not reached the postseason since 1999 before McDermott’s arrival. However, Cabot also noted a significant potential roadblock to McDermott’s interest in Cleveland. While the Browns’ defensive talent would certainly appeal to the defensive-minded coach, the uncertainty at quarterback could give him pause. “I did have somebody pretty close to the situation say, I doubt he would come here, given the current state of affairs in the quarterback room for the Cleveland Browns,” she revealed. This quarterback uncertainty represents a stark contrast to McDermott’s situation in Buffalo, where he enjoyed the luxury of coaching superstar quarterback Josh Allen. Whether the Browns can convince him they have a viable path forward at the position could ultimately determine if this surprise coaching opportunity becomes a serious possibility. The Browns’ coaching search continues to evolve in unexpected ways, with second interviews now underway for several candidates.
