Sean Higgins, charged with the deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, pleads not guilty to all charges related to a drunk-driving crash.
Prosecutors offered a plea deal recommending 35 years in prison for Sean Higgins , the man charged in the deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew. Higgins pleaded not guilty to all charges related to the August drunk-driving crash, including two counts of second-degree reckless vehicular homicide, two counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter, one count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
Higgins is accused of swerving in front of another car while attempting to pass, striking the brothers who were biking home ahead of a wedding the next day. Prosecutors said Higgins called 911 and attempted to help the Gaudreaus after the crash. According to court filings, Higgins' statements to authorities were 'internally inconsistent and contradicted the statements' of the other two drivers involved. Charging documents state that Higgins admitted to consuming five to six beers before driving and having another two beers before the crash. He also admitted to trying to hide beer cans after hitting the cyclists
