Former Padres third baseman made a comeback from several years of drug addiction in the late 2000s that he said could've killed him

Sean Burroughs played baseball well enough — and long enough — to lead his Long Beach Little League team to a World Series Championship, to win a gold medal with the United States Olympic team and to begin his professional career at age 17 as a Padres draftee. But it wasn’t anything Burroughs did with a baseball bat that stood tallest among his publicly known successes.

“I came up in the years where people were doing things to help themselves, to be stronger, better,” said Burroughs. “There I was, especially at the end, doing things that stunted my hand-eye coordination and my senses. I was doing things to negate my play.” Traded by Towers after the 2005 season and released by both the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners by mid-2007, Burroughs would walk away from the sport that had been a huge part of his family's life for two generations.
