Week 1 – Denver Broncos @ Seattle Seahawks, September 8th, 1:05pm, Lumen Field, Seattle, WAThe 2023 Broncos defense was 27th in points, 29th in yards, and 22nd in sacks. Their defensive front was arguably the worst unit in the entire NFL. They replaced Justin Simmons with Brandon Jones, Josey Jewell with Cody Barton, and Mike Purcell with Malcom Roach, all downgrades. Vance Joseph is a great coach but there is no reason to think this defense will improve in 2024.
Expect a heavy dose of Ken Walker and Zach Charbonnet. Alex Singleton is a good linebacker but this Seahawks run game should really shine on Sunday. With the run game keeping Denver’s pass rush honest Geno Smith will pick apart Denver’s secondary. JSN and Lockett will keep the chains moving while DK will get several deep shots, likely capitalizing on a couple.
The Seahawks will be without Uchenna Nwosu which is a big loss, but Dremont Jones and Derick Hall should be able to keep the impact minimal. Macdonald has indicated that the cornerbacks will play both sides, so I expect to see a lot of different looks in the secondary. It’s the linebackers that haven’t shown much yet in the preseason and who will be critical to keeping Denver’s pass game in check.
