The Seattle Seahawks are retaining veteran nose tackle Johnathan Hankins for another season. NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported the news Tuesday, indicating that the 33-year-old will sign a one-year deal. While the financial terms haven't been officially released, the reunion comes after Seattle didn't draft a nose tackle this year, making Hankins' return more likely.
While primarily known for his run-stopping prowess, Hankins provided a memorable defensive highlight last season when he intercepted San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy on a tipped pass. Despite his main role being centered on run defense, Hankins demonstrated his versatility and recording five tackles for loss (his most since 2019), 30 tackles, and a sack, averaging about 23 snaps per game. The Seahawks' decision to bring back Hankins follows a period of significant roster turnover. The team opted to move on from its entire 2024 free agency class after generally underwhelming results. Hankins remained unsigned even through the compensatory free agency period (which concluded on Monday). However, with the draft complete, Seattle has opted for a familiar veteran presence to fill the crucial nose tackle position.
