Will we see the Seahawks go for it on 4th down more under Coach Macdonald than Coach Carroll? We’ll have to wait and find out.
One of the side stories Seattle Seahawks fans will be following is the in-game decision making of head coach Mike Macdonald. This was a perennial talking point under Pete Carroll, who had a tendency to punt or kick a field goal in lieu of going for it on 4th and short. Those decisions became more pronounced as the defense tumbled down the rankings. At Tuesday’s post-practice media session, Macdonald was asked by Hawkblogger’s Brian Nemhauser about how he would utilize analytics in his decisions.
” Macdonald comes from a Baltimore Ravens organization known for a robust analytics department, and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh developed a reputation for regularly going for it on 4th down when data models recommended to do so. For whatever reason, Harbaugh completely backed off last season and was puzzlingly safe with his MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson. Two seasons ago, the Seahawks bolstered their own analytics department following the disappointing 2021 campaign.
