Lampricide is being used to treat an estimated 15,200 sea lamprey larvae.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began targeting sea lamprey larvae in Conneaut Creek last week, an invasive species that has been devastating lake trout and salmon all around the Great Lakes for the past century. USFWS officials say the lampricide used in the Ohio and Pennsylvania sections Conneaut Creek right now are safe for humans and pets.
USFWS crews in white trucks will be touring Conneaut Creek to treat its waters and collecting data. Officials say the low concentration of lampricides used are safe for humans and pets, and fish caught from treated waters are safe to eat.
Shore fishermen are casting Rat-L-Trap, Cordell Spot and Sonar vibrating rattle baits, and well as swim baits, which combine lead-head jigs and plastic fish bodies, and diving plugs. Offshore boat anglers in waters 40 feet or deeper are trolling crankbaits, or making the switch to double-spinner nightcrawler harnesses.The steelhead trout runs are just about over in the Northeast Ohio rivers and streams, but not the fun fishing.
“We’re already seeing a lot of the tournament fishermen on site, and we expect a lot of trophy walleye coming to the scales,” said Craig Lewis at Erie Outfitters in Sheffield Lake.Fishermen continue to prowl the Northeast Ohio rivers and streams for steelhead trout, but the run is almost over. Anglers are still catching some of the big trout in the rivers, but most are done spawning and slowly working their way back to Lake Erie to feed and recover from the rigors of the spawn.
