Aztecs begin season with game against Texas A&M-Commerce, have two open dates in first half of season before extended stretch of Mountain West games
The San Diego State football team catches a break — two of them, in fact — during the first half of the 2024 season. That sounds good. Actually, it’s not. The Aztecs' two byes mean they won’t get a break during the second half of coach Sean Lewis' first season, when a breather would be welcomed amid five straight weeks of Mountain West games.
Per the schedule unveiled by the conference on Thursday, both of SDSU’s off-weeks will precede non-conference contests — before a road game against Central Michigan and a home game against Washington State. For the second consecutive season, the Mountain West will compete as one 12-team league rather than two six-team divisions. The two teams with the best winning percentages will play in the championship game, with the higher-ranked team hosting. This year's schedule comes with one notable change: Teams will play seven conference games rather than eight. The change is being made to accommodate Oregon State and Washington State, who need opponents following the Pac-12's implosion. The Beavers and Cougars will play six Mountain West teams apiece. SDSU’s 12-game schedule has its share of notables: • SDSU plays six home games and six road games for only the second time in seven full seasons. The Aztecs had become accustomed to seven home games in recent years. As such, season-ticket prices are approximately 20 percent lower than last season, which included seven home games. It's effectively a 6-7 percent reduction in cost year over year. • At this point, games all are listed for Saturday kickoffs. Some games could be moved to weekdays — typically a Friday afternoon or evening — for television. SDSU typically plays two Friday games each season, though they had only one last season. Kickoff times and TV broadcast networks — the Mountain West partners with CBS and Fox — will be announced in the coming months. • San Diego State will not play regional rival Fresno State as part of the MW's seven-game conference schedule, meaning the Aztecs will keep the 'Old Oil Can' for at least another year. The Aztecs beat the Bulldogs 33-18 in November to win the perpetual trophy. San Diego State and Fresno State played their first game in 1927, and had been on each other's schedules every year since 2011. The teams' 2020 game was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within Fresno State's program. • The Aztecs open the 2024 campaign with a home game Aug. 31 against Texas A&M-Commerce. There is an extra week in the calendar, which is why SDSU has two bye weeks instead of one. SDSU is off Sept. 21 and Oct. 19, the fourth and eighth weeks of the season. • SDSU's spring practices will begin March 12. They'll practice 15 times over six weeks, with the players off the week of April 1 for spring break. The annual Spring Game will be held Aug. 20 at Snapdragon Stadium. SDSU went 4-8 last year, marking the Aztecs’ first losing season since 2009. It ended a school-record stretch of 12 straight full seasons in which the Aztecs played in a bowl game. Lewis was hired to replace Brady Hoke.
