More than 80 acres of parks and open space to open by end of year, although game day footprint will remain the same for 2023 football season
For more than half a century, the stadium located in Mission Valley was surrounded by one of the largest parking lots in North America. One of the major benefits of so much asphalt was that fans could spread out far and wide when they tailgated. The lots adjacent to Snapdragon Stadium total roughly one-third the number of parking spaces. As a result, San Diego State officials restricted how much space tailgates could occupy.
“Those logistics haven’t been determined yet,” Jacobs said. “We definitely look forward to having those parks support those events. The details are going to have to be worked out.” That lot, as well as those located east and north of Snapdragon, will disappear as construction takes place for the Innovation District, residential, retail and hotel. Some details on what’s coming:
There also will be a table for something called “soccer ping-pong,” which is growing in popularity. It’s a hybrid of soccer and ping-pong that involves using any part of the body other than the hands and arms to get the ball across the table .“That’s going to be a nice little space with some boulders for people to sit on,” Jacobs said. “We can have classes come out, or boy scout or girl scout troops can come out and get to explore that riparian environment.
“Part of that trail network in the river park,” Jacobs said, “is a segment of the San Diego River Trail, which is the trail that is ultimately planned to go from the mountains to the bay along the San Diego River. We’re building a segment of that trail on site.”
