San Diego State Aztecs coaches are hitting the road during their open week to evaluate recruits and build relationships with potential future players.

San Diego State Aztecs head coach Sean Lewis walks the sidelines during last week’s game at Cal. San Diego State football players have a rare weekend to themselves as the Aztecs welcome the first of two open week s on the 2024 schedule.Shortly after Thursday morning’s practice ended, Aztecs coaches hit the recruiting trail.

Though they went to different high schools and colleges, Lewis and Dillon remained in constant contact through the years. The off week allows two days on the road, visiting high school campuses to speak with coaches, counselors and teachers and attend practices and games. The early commitments also include five offensive linemen, three wide receivers, two defensive linemen, defensive backs and tight ends and one running back.“We want to take care of our commits first,” Diilon said. “We want to see them live.”“We want to do our homework on the 2026s,” Dillon said. “We want to get them here as much as possible. We want to get to know them, talk to as many sources as possible.

“You’ve got to be more strategic now since they moved up the signing day,” Dillon said. “In the past, you had one or two weekends in December before the signing day to bring in kids for official visits.
