The department on Tuesday said the facility's upgrades include two hand-painted murals, a redesigned lobby, a Wall of Honor for fallen SDPD officers and three wooden, decorative SDPD badges. The San Diego Police Department is set to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday to celebrate completion of more than $1 million in upgrades to the building known as Police Plaza, a former Chargers facility turned hub for SDPD training and recruitment.

The department on Tuesday said the facility's upgrades include two hand-painted murals, a redesigned lobby, a"Wall of Honor" for fallen SDPD officers and three wooden, decorative SDPD badges. Last year, the SDPD also completed renovations to the fitness center at Police Plaza, featuring new flooring, paint, lighting and weight equipment, with expanded training space, allowing officers access to fitness programs year- round. Since the SDPD assumed control of the facility in 2018, much of the building remained untouched for years, the department said. Now, the facility houses more than 200 personnel, supporting officers' well-being. It also serves as a place for community events. In 2023, the department received a $1.2 million wellness grant from the Board of State and Community Corrections. The grant allowed the SDPD to upgrade fitness facilities and equipment at Police Plaza and its nine police stations."With support from the San Diego Police Foundation, the department focused on making Police Plaza a welcoming place for SDPD personnel, recruits and community members, while preserving and celebrating the department's legacy," the SDPD said.
