SDCC 2024: Borderlands Cast Talks Costumes, Creatures & Cate Blanchett

Summary After a decade of attempts, Gearbox's iconic action video game franchise is coming to the screen with Borderlands. The movie takes primary inspiration from the first game in the series, telling the story of infamous outlaw Lilith, who is hired by the universe's most powerful person, Atlas, in order to find his daughter on Lilith's homeworld, Pandora.

In honor of this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Screen Rant interviewed co-writer/director Eli Roth and stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Edgar Ramirez, and Florian Munteanu to discuss Borderlands, how they went about adapting the games and its various creatures, and praising getting to work with Cate Blanchett.

Jamie Lee Curtis: Well, a lot isn't in the movie, which is what happens in movies. You shoot a lot and then it doesn't end up in the movie. What happened, I don't know if even you guys know this, when I landed in Budapest, I knew what the script said and I had done a little bit of fan fiction reading, but I hadn't really paid that much attention to what the real history of the game was.

Eli Roth: That suited you. It took very shockingly little time for Edgar to just snap, right? We know he's such a nice guy, but whoa, he's really good at this not a nice guy. Florian Munteanu: Appreciate that. And I knew I had to pay that trust back, and Ariana made it very easy for me to build that symbiosis and build that energy that those two characters have. So we had a lot of fun with it in general as a family together. And I think you can see that on screen.

It was cold and deep, and we were down there for three weeks, and Florian was down there without clothes on for three weeks. The rest of us had jackets and things. I mean, it was intense. And that's where a lot of the battles take place. And so you also have to have that. There's that amazing energy of a group of talented stunt people who are also not wearing any clothes in the freezing cold, really throwing it down.

Eli Roth: You believe it like the way you look at Clint Eastwood is the man with no name. You look at Snakeskin as a bounty. You look at Cate as Lilith, you're like, there's no question. She's just that pissed off bounty hunter who's annoyed at everybody. But she's so funny and so fantastic and her physicality. And then there was a moment where we put her and Kevin, we hadn't even rehearsed it, just her and Kevin back-to-back shooting and it was like ballet.

Eli Roth: And it had to look like they were real clothes, that they lived in them. Certain things that work good in the game, you would replicate it and go, this actually doesn't work on a person. It doesn't function well. So it was a combination of getting the essence of the characters, getting the essence of the actors, having them feel good about it. Obviously you're talking to someone like Jamie who has so much experience at dialing in iconic characters.

I was thrilled in the same way I did Everything Everywhere All At Once because Michelle Yeoh was in it. I swear they said movie, this thing I didn't understand. They said, Michelle Yeoh. I said yes, because these are women who are changing cinema with their incredible work. And for me as an actor to be able to work with them.

Jamie Lee Curtis: I know that seems weird to y'all, that you think we're all just BSing you. But the truth is, most of us are unemployed most of our lives. Actors are really unemployed a lot. So when you get an opportunity to work on something with actors you admire, you say yes. It's not, this isn't a hard decision.
