While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to ABlackLadySketchShow production designers Cindy Chao and Michele Yu about designing the show, collaborating with Robin Thede, and their work on AmericanBornChinese;
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The fourth and final season of A Black Lady Sketch Show premiered this spring, receiving a host of critical praise just as its predecessors. Alongside the main cast of Robin Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend, the latest season featured a slew of special guest stars like Yvette Nicole Brown and Sam Richardson.
Speaking of collaboration, can you talk to me about the collaboration process of working with Robin on this show?Michele Yu: Robin Thede is the ultimate collaborator. She has such a great sense and a talent for curating talent. And the times that we haven't, I feel like it's just something that just, whether it's budgetary or maybe location falls through, or just something that we can't control out of our hands, we're not able to execute.
Cindy Chau: When we start, we get a Bible of all the sketches, and it's thick. It's over 200 pages. And we get the opportunity to participate in the table read too, so we see all the actors perform and read through each sketch. Which is amazing, because once they deliver, it's so different from how the comedy is from reading the page.Michele Yu: Yeah, for various reasons. Sometimes once they start reading it, you can really feel the energy.
And there are so many different avenues and departments within production design. It's like you got to know everything. But also, I still like, every day there's always something new that I've never done before, which is very exciting. And the challenge is always very exciting. Michele Yu: Yeah. And when, usually we have about a week where it's just Cindy and I on as the production designers. Department heads get hired first. But usually, a couple of weeks into it we'll have our set decorator, which for all four seasons has been Lizzie Boyle, and our prop master, Todd Daniels, they'll start pretty much soon after that. So they're also doing their own breakdowns. We're having meetings with them every day. We're also getting our offices set up.
Cindy Chau: Thank you, thank you. Honestly, the collaboration, and how key communication is, not only within our department but with other departments as well. And just being super collaborative and organized in that way.
