We had the chance to talk to some of the stars of ForAllMankind, including TheRealShantel, Jodi Balfour, wrennschmidt, sonyawalger & iamedigathegi, as well as EPs RonDMoore & TallShipProds about season 3 of the acclaimed series at SDCC:
Heading into the conclusion of season 3, For All Mankind was just renewed for season 4. Apple TV+'s acclaimed alternate history series about the NASA space program sees its various astronauts landing on Mars in season 3, while political turmoil and personal tensions continue on the Red Planet and back home on Earth.
Awesome. So let's start with Ron and Meryl, as executive producers. I find it so interesting that the show takes place every 10 years. Because the X-Men movies did that, but not quite as well, the way you do it is so seamless. So what was behind that creative decision? Why jump ahead every decade? Maril Davis: It's funny in the beginning, I remember thinking, I don't like the 10-year jump. I said to Ben and Ron, 10 years so long, we'll miss so much interesting story. There's so much interesting stuff going on those 10 years that we're not going to see. But it's funny. They've done such a masterful job and you feel like you don't miss it. You feel like you are uncovering those little nooks and crannies as you go.
Awesome. So let's start with Jodi. Madame President. So what's it like going from playing one of the first female astronauts to now being the first female president in your world? And slowly, in my mind, the Karen that we meet this season is the Karen that's always lived inside, but she never, I guess, took the place of putting herself first. And now that we see that we get to see her being an incredible businesswoman, and all the women that went before her who inspired her to step into this place in these positions and go up against this guy. [gestures to Edi Gathegi ]
Wrenn, Margo is one of my absolute favorite characters. And I especially love how in season one, she couldn't forgive von Braun for being a Nazi and a war criminal. But now she's a kompromat. Can you talk about her predicament? How that's worked out for her in the last couple of seasons? And how do I walk this tightrope in a way that feels like it's both about taking care of people, but also trying to protect the program? And where do I fit in that? You cannot ask for a better sandbox to play in. That's just been a lot of fun. There's always something interesting to play underneath the words and all those moments. So thank you [to Ron and Maril].
