Scorsese’s change of direction opened the door for Dallas-born Jesse Plemons to step into a larger role.
Director Martin Scorsese arrived for the premiere of "Killers of the Flower Moon" at the London Film Festival on Oct. 7.
DiCaprio was initially cast to play FBI agent Tom White, who is investigating the murders. But the new storyline had Plemons playing White. DiCaprio switched to the role of Ernest Burkhart. Ernest marries Mollie Kyle, an Osage woman played byThe Ernest-Mollie relationship allowed for an inside approach to the tragedy and a deeper love story, Scorsese said.
Plemons said filming the movie in Osage County and the surrounding area where the murders took place gave the role added significance for him. “The place, as beautiful as it is, can shift to being very sinister,” he said. “And what I wanted to capture, ultimately, was the very nature of the virus or the cancer that creates this sense of a kind of easygoing genocide.”and other Osage Nation representatives. He said he assured them the movie would be as honest and truthful as possible.“What I didn’t really understand the first couple of meetings was that this is an ongoing situation, an ongoing story, out in Oklahoma,” he said.
