Scream co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin has asked fans not to spoil the new sequel movie for others after it releases this Friday. 'The whole cast and crew worked so hard over the last two years to keep our many secrets.'

Scream is set for release this Friday, January 14, and director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin has asked fans not to spoil the new sequel movie when it comes out. The fifth entry in the Scream franchise, 2002's Scream will see the return of franchise stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, and Roger L. Jackson as the voice of iconic serial killer Ghostface. The legacy cast will feature newcomers Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, and Jack Quaid.

This year's Scream will continue the story of Ghostface, a masked killer who uses threatening phone calls to scare his victims before killing them with a knife. A direct sequel to Scream 4, the new film will continue the canon of the franchise while making a new start, hence the official title being Scream and not Scream 5.

Craven, having directed all the previous Scream movies, as well as other horror classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Last House on the Left, passed away in 2015, with the new Scream paying tribute to his legacy. Bettinelli-Olpin and his co-director Tyler Gillett have made their names with horror films Ready Or Not and Southbound. Both directors, and original star Campbell, have also talked about doing more films if 2022's Scream proves a success.

Horror is a very delicate genre, where the scares come from underneath and between shots, through editing, camerawork, lighting, and mise en scene; all of which are necessary to give the audience the intended experience. The original Scream taught horror fans that horror can be self-aware and funny without sacrificing the tension needed for a good scare, and that comedy and horror both rely on pacing and buildup to work.
