The original Scream movie kicked off a giant horror film franchise and starred an ensemble of actors who went on to have prolific and successful careers. Scream is Wes Craven’s meta-response to the slasher films that had come out in the years prior. It serves as both a parody and a terrifying horror movie in its own right, and Ghostface has become an icon of horror and Halloween. Scream famously killed off Drew Barrymore at the start of the film to the dismay of shocked viewers everywhere.
Drew Barrymore Barrymore was the biggest name in Scream upon its release and most audiences understood that to mean she would be leading the cast. It was completely unexpected when it turned out her character, Casey Becker, would not make it through the first scene. This angered studio execs, who even threatened to fire Craven over the opening. After Scream, Barrymore continued her success on film, often in rom-coms like Never Been Kissed as Josie Geller and 50 First Dates as Lucy Whitmore.
Matthew Lillard Matthew Lillard played Stu Macher in the Scream cast. Stu is Casey's ex-boyfriend and at the end of the film is revealed to be the secret accomplice of Ghostface, explaining how the villain seems to be everywhere at once. Lillard’s high-energy performance is essential to the character and would be something he would tap into in later roles. He best put his zany style to use in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies where he played Shaggy to perfection.
Jamie Kennedy Randy Meeks, played by Jamie Kennedy, is one of the students in Scream. A horror fan, Randy has a list of rules in Scream that he uses to comment on what the characters are experiencing and on the movie itself. Kennedy reprised his role as Randy in Scream 2, but those two films were his only forays into horror. In movies, he notably appears in The Boiler Room as Adam and went on to mostly work in television afterward.
