EXCUSIVE: Brian Roy and Michael Sharpe hit out at Labour-run North Lanarkshire council over proposals to shut a raft of sport and leisure facilities
Two former Scottish Labour general secretaries have slammed their party over plans to close sports centres and community facilities in North Lanarkshire.
The Labour-run local authority is closing 39 swimming pools, sports centres, libraries and other community services to plug a budget shortfall. “Local people are rightly furious about the way this decision and the way it has been handled. These facilities are vital for communities across North Lanarkshire. They provide access to essential services, supporting physical fitness and mental wellbeing.
“As a socialist, I'm disgusted to see Labour closing facilities that proudly bear the names of great working-class heroes like Matt Busby and Keir Hardie. It adds insult to injury.
