The Scottish Government has published the findings of its public consultation, revealing that most respondents support increasing taxation on second and long term empty homes. The only group opposed to tax penalties for empty properties was the tourism sector. Regional Labour MSP Mark Griffin has welcomed the findings and is calling for increased taxes and compulsory purchases of empty properties.

Cumbernauld South councillor James McPhilemy agreed, adding: “There are a number of long-term empty homes in Cumbernauld, some of which have fallen into severe disrepair.
