Chief cheerleader commissioner Randy Ambrosie pitches the league as 'fun, fast and entertaining'. Big markets need convincing CFL
Ambrosie is also well-schooled in another football tactic: misdirection. Even as interest in the CFL has sagged in the big cities, the commissioner has pitched ambitious plans to grow the league in other ways. His much-vaunted “CFL 2.0,” in which the league would recruit players from Mexico, Europe and Asia in hopes that the added global talent would bring sponsorship and media deals from far-off lands, has cooled in recent years, and the focus now is on potential expansion.
The CFL has been out there waving its flag for years, in other words, so it needs another party to reciprocate that interest. “The future for our league is to go from nine to 10 first, but you know, once you get to 10 you’ve got to have an appetite for 12,” he says.Ambrosie laughs at this. “I don’t think you can be a great business unless you get to that next level and then you’re thinking about the level after that,” he says. At a board of governors meeting the day before we spoke, he says, a 12-team league was part of the conversation.
