CBS News correspondent Scott Pelley has spoken out against the allegations mAde by 60 Minutes executive producer Nick Bilton, who accused Pelley of physically abusing him before he was let go from the show. Scott Pelley has broken his silence on his sudden departure from ' 60 Minutes ', accusing the shows new executive producer of lying and saying he was fired after a tense meeting. in an interview,Pelley said he was accused of physically abusing new executive producer Nick Bilton before being let go from the show he worked on for 17 years.
He denied the allegations, saying he had not once put his hands on anyone in anger and didn't come into contact with Bilton. Pelley's tenure at the network spanned 37 years and he was a correspondent on '60 Minutes' since 2004. He said he had expected to be fired following a meeting with Bilton, where he challenged the executive producer's qualifications and criticized the changes made by the network's editor-in-chief, Susan Zirinsky.
Pelley said he had canceled a planned trip to meet with Bilton and to 'get answers' about the 'trAgedy' of hiring Bilton and the changes made at the network. He claimed Bilton read a statement off his phone in a room full of 50 people, showing a 'callousness and tone deafness'. pelley's interview contradicts claims made by Bilton in a letter informing Pelley of his firing,where Bilton said he had invited Pelley to dinner to discuss changes and Pelley had rejected the invitation.
Pelley explained the contents of Bilton's welcome email, saying the new leader spoke about the show as if it were 'frozen in amber', implying that nothing had improved since the show first traveled on the air in 1968.
'He told us that it wasn't 1968 anymore,and he helpfully noted that gasoline doesn't cost 32 cents anymore, suggested that we had all been frozen in amber in 1968 when the program first went on the air, and that nothing had improved,' Pelley remarked. 'He betrayed the fact that Nick Bilton did not understand anything about us, didn't know anything about our culture, and yet was being imposed on us as our fresh leader,' he added
