Former Alabama and Georgia assistant Scott Cochran returns to coaching with a focus on recovery. He'll lead the West Alabama Tigers while promoting awareness and support for those battling addiction.
Scott Cochran 's return to coaching is more than just a job; it's a personal mission fueled by his journey of recovery. After battling drug addiction during his time at Alabama and Georgia, Cochran found two years of sobriety before a relapse forced him to step away from coaching following the 2023 season. Now, as the new head coach of the West Alabama Tigers, he aims to use his platform to champion recovery and spread awareness.
Cochran's year away from the game was spent traveling the country, speaking to teams and groups about his experiences. He opened up his social media accounts, connecting with those who needed help and directing them towards resources. This outreach led to the creation of a non-profit organization focused on supporting individuals on their recovery journeys. Cochran's passion for recovery is evident in his plans for the West Alabama program. He intends to incorporate purple into team attire – purple socks, mouthpieces, and even stickers on helmets – to symbolize the fight against addiction and raise awareness during September, which is designated as Recovery Month. Cochran believes this initiative aligns perfectly with his mission and hopes to inspire others across the country.West Alabama welcomes Cochran to a program that thrived last year, achieving a 9-2 record as a Division II team. He replaces Brett Gilliland, who transitioned to the role of athletics director. UWA president Todd Fritch expressed confidence in Cochran's ability to guide the young men, citing his compelling story and experience overcoming his own challenges. Fritch believes Cochran's transparency and leadership will be invaluable assets to the team
