A mum is calling for an overhaul in how people with learning difficulties are treated, having not seen her son in three-and-a-half years since he was taken into care at the State Hospital in Carstairs.
The psychiatric unit in South Lanarkshire provides care and treatment for high security patients. Those admitted to the hospital are usually believed to pose a risk to the public with some of the most violent offenders receiving treatment there. The 56-year-old told Glasgow Live : "Gordon ended up in the ICU ward of Levendale Hospital. He struggled to cope in the ward. He had harmed himself. It was decided that he was supposed to go to a medium security unit in Glasgow called Rowanbank.
"It's an absolute nightmare and I worry that I may never see my son again. It's like a death. They should not have a learning disability ward in that hospital. These boys are deteriorating in that environment." Top news stories today "He was my best friend and I love him so much. Gordon was so bubbly and loveable. A catastrophic series of events has led to this nightmare and there needs to be change. I feel like the families are ignored when it comes to medication and care of their child."
"We are asking for places in the community, well paid care and for people to be trained well. We also want the families to be involved with their loved-ones' care.
