Laura Murray, 43, believes her daughter faces discrimination because she has repeatedly had operations cancelled at the last minute
A worried mum is preparing to take her precious little girl for an operation this week but fears a lack of high dependency beds could see it cancelled.
Laura wants both to be done under one general anaesthesia. Recently, they were to go ahead but a week before, she was told there was no one available from gastroenterology to perform that part of the operation, so it was cancelled. After the operation, Blathnaid would need to be on a ventilator for a time, which requires an HDU bed. She also has a feeding tube that is “leaking black ooze” and needs to be replaced.
“She is picking up lots of respiratory viruses, which hit her hard because of her breathing issues. Last month, she had two stays in intensive care. She’s had a really rough time. I am at the end of my rope after six years of fighting for her. Laura has now been assured everything has been set up for the operations to go ahead. She said: “They appear to be pulling out all the stops but it can still be cancelled last minute if there are no HDU beds.”
“Children must not be disadvantaged in this way. Hospitals need to make sure they have adequate numbers of specialist trained staff to allow procedures to go ahead.”
