To counter the build-up of traffic and litter during summer, the directors of Scotland’s popular NC500 road trip are now trying to entice visitors to come in the winter by sleeper train and explore the route by public transport 🔵 SophieLamTravel
By encouraging visitors to arrive by train, the aim is to show that the NC500 is “so much more than a road trip”, according to Craig Mills, its chief operating officer. He is putting the focus on the route in autumn and winter, encouraging arrivals to travel to Inverness on the Caledonian Sleeper train and then take a “slower paced holiday”.
This seems to imply favouring public transport for onward travel, but might also include hiking and cycling. There are now several tour operators offering organised group cycling tours along the route, such as Pedal Britain, Pedal Nation, Wild Atlantic Cycling and Wilderness Scotland. Macs Adventure operates a mixed hiking and road trip tour while Hike Scotland operates week-long walking tours.
