Scotland facing chronic shortage of health officers as councils struggle to recruit

Scotland is facing a “worrying” chronic shortage of environmental health officers, the Daily Record can reveal. It’s feared the shortfall will cripple efforts to deal with river, air and noise pollution in local areas – as well as keep on top of food hygiene inspections.

All councils in Scotland employ Environmental Health Officers to keep tabs on local environmental problems that could affect people’s health, such as pest infestations, toxic contamination, pollution and substandard housing. They also work with Food Standards Scotland to routinely inspect restaurants, cafes and pubs.
