The main cast of Scooby-Doo: Origins has finally been confirmed, and it makes the upcoming adaptation all the more exciting. Since the beloved franchise launched in 1969, the central Mystery Gang— comprised of Norville"Shaggy" Rogers, Velma Dinkley, Daphne Blake, Fred Jones, and a talking Great Dane named Scooby-Doo— has remained a timeless ensemble of iconic characters.
Given that each generation has earned its own television series, films, comic books, video games, and more, however, the IP is constantly being reworked— for better and for worse. Nevertheless, Netflix's upcoming Scooby-Doo series already feels like a promising, albeit risky, modern retelling. Aside from being the first live-action TV title in Scooby-Doo history, the adaptation will focus on a massively underdeveloped aspect of the IP— the titular"origins" of the Mystery Gang.
Very few series and films have attempted to explore the humble beginnings of the group , but Scooby-Doo: Origins will be constructing its own lore from the ground up. From being set at a summer camp to reportedly jumping headfirst into a murder mystery, the Netflix original will be a major gamble. Thankfully, the live-action Scooby-Doo show's cast is a safe bet with talent to spare.
Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake Born: June 25, 2006 Without a doubt, the unofficial star of Scooby-Doo: Origins is Mckenna Grace. At only 19 years old, the actress is already considered a generational talent, with a whopping 84 roles under her belt. The star broke into the industry portraying younger versions of characters in film and television, from Caroline Forbes in The Vampire Diaries to Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, but her immense talent was instantly undeniable.
Throughout the 2020s, Grace has transitioned to leading roles in major motion pictures, joining ubiquitous franchises like The Hunger Games, Scream, and Five Nights at Freddy's. The young actor has been active for nearly a decade, but the vast majority of his early career has consisted of one-off appearances on television shows like The Pitt, a wide array of short films, and a recurring spot on an infamous short-form content channel called Dhar Mann.
Thankfully, Scooby-Doo: Origins seems like the perfect breakthrough role for Hagen. Beyond being Daphne's longtime friend, Scooby-Doo: Origins will likely draw on Shaggy's established lore. Of course, the character is renowned for his voracious appetite, abundant use of the word"like," and kinship with the eponymous dog, but the franchise has also added intriguing details to explain his biggest quirks.
For example, Shaggy has a surprisingly successful athletic streak as a gymnast and track & field athlete, while his constant snacking is supplemental to his vegetarian diet. While these fun facts are a solid starting point, Scooby-Doo: Origins will hopefully dig much deeper into the character's adolescence. While she carried one of the most underrated comedy films of the decade, however, Abby Ryder Fortson deserves more mainstream success.

Many may consider Fred Jones to be the Mystery Gang's most basic character, but the Scooby-Doo franchise has proven time and time again that looks may be deceiving. Fred is the team's de facto leader, often spearheading investigations and setting elaborate traps to catch the masked culprits. What most casual viewers probably don't know is that Fred has a background in drama, ambitions of being a writer, and— in certain continuities— was kidnapped as a child.
Regardless, Scooby-Doo: Origins merely describes Fred as the"new kid" in town, leaving his character a practically blank slate.
