A new study challenges our understanding of the stellar life cycle of white dwarf stars.
are considered the remains of stars such as our Sun, which will ultimately become one once its nuclear fuel is depleted.
“This is the first time this transport mechanism has been observed in any type of star, which is exciting, as it is not every day we uncover a whole new astrophysical phenomenon,” said Antoine Bédard, Research Fellow at the University of Warwick. White dwarf stars are considered “dead” because they no longer produce heat, resulting in slow cooling of their core.
Scientists study white dwarfs for a variety of reasons, including their potential to shed light on the formation of the Milky Way galaxy.
