How did life arise from lifeless molecules? Scientists recreated the mitochondria and biochemical nutrient transport throughout a synthetic cell.

Several Dutch institutions are working together to investigate how life arose from lifeless molecules. In two recently published papers, scientists successfully recreated the mitochondria and biochemical nutrient transport throughout a synthetic cell. While these are only two of a whole host of processes that need to be recreated to truly mimic a cell, these first creations show compelling of evidence of how life first formed a toehold on Earth.

“Instead of the hundreds of components of mitochondria, our system for energy conversion uses just five,” Poolman said in a press statement. “Evolution is a one-way street, it builds on existing components and this often makes the outcome very complex.” However, when you’re building from scratch, you can design the cell from the ground up with specific functions in mind.
