Scientists warn that climate change will lead to more frequent and extreme floods, with the North East of the country expected to experience the most significant changes. Recent water scarcity warnings and flooding incidents highlight the urgent need for climate mitigation and adaptation measures.
Scientists predict that while more floods are likely in different parts of the country, the North East will see some of the most drastic changes to the frequency of events.climate change
“You can build bigger walls but that is only part of the story and is unlikely to solve the problem on its own,” said Professor Beevers. Professor Marc Stutter, senior environmental and biochemical scientist, pointed out that traditionally flood prevention projects involved “hard engineering” such as walls and embankments.“‘Soft engineering’ helps to create a more biodiverse landscape and can supplement those hard engineering options so we don’t have to keep building higher walls.
Edinburgh University climatologist Professor Simon Tett said the effect of climate change is making the breaching of flood defences more likely.
