Scientists have discovered that TB is also found in animals
Scientists have warned that, if the TB problem in domestic animals and wildlife species is not taken care of, there may be a spillover to humans, something that would add to the total human TB burden.
Professor Michele Miller, who leads the group, said the death of this elephant had perplexed scientists: TB is often only thought of as a disease that affects humans, when in fact it is a multihost disease. Although animals are typically infected with Mycobacterium bovis and humans with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, reports have increasingly shown reverse infection from animals to humans and vice versa.
