Our understanding of Earth’s history may have just ... shifted.
The modern understanding of the plate tectonic cycle predicts that remnants of submerged plates will be found near subduction zones. However, a new high-resolution model shows that these remnants can also be found far from subduction zones, complicating this-long held geologic narrative.
The model displayed remnants of submerged plates located under oceans and in the middle of continents, which—according to our current understanding of the plate tectonic cycle—are all too far from any subduction zone. The results of the study were published in the journal Scientific Reports. One example of these areas is in the western Pacific, where the presence of a submerged plate should be impossible, as there’s been no subduction zone nearby in recent geologic history.
