A team of researchers conducted the first-ever dissection of a spade-toothed whale, one of the most elusive creatures of the deep, after a 16-foot male was found beached in New Zealand. The dissection provided valuable insights into the anatomy, biology, and diet of this rare species.

Research ers have conducted the first-ever dissection of a spade-toothed whale — one of the most elusive creatures of the deep.

To date, only six confirmed specimens have been found. Moreover, nobody has seen this giant beaked whale alive ever. “In some of those stomachs we found squid beaks and some lenses from the eyes of squid, a few parasitic worms, and maybe some other parts of organisms that we are not quite sure of,” said Anton van Helden, Marine Science Advisor at DOC.
