New tiny deer species namely– Pudella carlae spotted in central Andes, marks the first cervid species found in South America in over 60 years.
, spotted in the central Andes in Peru, exclusive to the dry valleys of the Huancabamba Depression. This discovery marks the first new cervid species found in South America in over 60 years. This discovery was significant as it also led to the resurgence of Pudella genus. This genus was previously observed by researchers in 1913 to distinguish the Northern and Southern species of pudus.
“He’d seen the animals in the field, and they looked different from others in the north,” D’Elia stated. is a member of the Pudu genus, the study also suggested that Northern pudu— presently classified as Pudu mephistophiles— should be included in it as well. “We don’t yet know if the new species arose from a population that became isolated when the depression formed, or from animals that later colonized and adapted, but we intend to find out,” D’Elia added.
Although the three species of pudus exhibit different characteristics in terms of size and weight, they are related. Additionally, the authors emphasized that, in general, pudus are shorter than 43 cm at the shoulder.
