These bursts of plasma, called chorus waves, ripple at the same frequency as human hearing.Researchers have captured such sounds in space before, but now they have sensed the chirping waves from much farther away: over 62,000 miles from Earth , where they’ve never been measured before.
Scientists still aren’t sure how the perturbations happen, but they think Earth’s magnetic field may have something to do with it. “They are one of the strongest and most significant waves in space,” said study author Chengming Liu from Beihang University in an email.
