Science Advances Storing data in DNA The world is drowning in data. Every click, every photo, every video creates an endless tsunami of information. And the current storage solutions could be soon hitting their limits.Hard drives are bulky, consume massive amounts of energy, and degrade over time. That’s why experts have been exploring DNA as a data storage solution to store vast amounts of information in a tiny format that can last for thousands of years. This approach offers a potential alternative to standard servers and hard drives.For instance, a single human cell’s DNA is said to hold a theoretical data storage capacity of 3.2 gigabytes, equivalent to 6,000 books, 1,000 songs, or two movies. Various previous studies have already explored DNA as a potential storage medium. However, the challenge has been how to make it a practical, accessible system. The new study presents a solution that borrows a nostalgic idea from the 80s and 90s: a DNA cassette tape that stores data just like old audio tapes stored music.A physical tape was developed from a polyester-nylon blend. After this, barcode patterns were printed onto its surface, creating millions of tiny, addressable sections – like individual folders on your computer. This innovative design could allow you to find the exact data you need quickly.Digital data is translated into a DNA sequence and then stored on the tape. DNA code works much like a computer’s binary code. Furthermore, a protective crystalline layer is then applied to the tape to prevent the DNA from degrading. It ensures the DNA storage can last for hundreds or even thousands of years without electricity. System’s functionality The team successfully demonstrated the system’s ability to quickly store and retrieve a digital image, proving its functionality for fast, large-scale data storage.In the study paper, they verified “its functionality by randomly depositing incomplete images into the data partition, demonstrating a completely automated closed-loop operation involving addressing, recovery, removal, subsequent file deposition, and file recovery again, all accomplished within 50 min.” PopSci reported that a single 328-foot DNA cassette tape may hold over 3 billion songs, a capacity far exceeding that of a traditional cassette tape. Moreover, the prototype device is expected to have “36 petabytes” of data, which is the same as the storage of “36,000 hard drives.”If successful, DNA cassette technology could provide a scalable solution for data centers by offering a more efficient and sustainable way to store vast amounts of data without much energy.The findings were published in the journal Science Advances.
