WASHINGTON—Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would begin the floor process next week to approve a roughly $1 trillion, prodding negotiators to resolve remaining issues over how to pay for the package.
The initial procedural vote, which Mr. Schumer said would take place Wednesday, will test the level of support for the agreement in the 50-50 Senate. While 11 Republicans and 11 members of the Democratic caucus have previously endorsed the deal, some of those Republicans more recently have raised doubts about how it plans to pay for the outlays, roughly $600 billion of which is above projected future federal spending.a $3.
for approving much of President Biden’s legislative agenda, including spending on child care, education and healthcare. Top Democrats have linked the two pieces of legislation, hoping to keep Democrats unified behind both efforts while attracting Republican support for the infrastructure plan. “Everybody has been having productive conversations, and it’s important to keep the two track process moving,” Mr. Schumer said. “All parties involved in the bipartisan infrastructure bill talks must now finalize their agreement so that the Senate can begin considering that legislation next week.”
The lawmakers ironing out the infrastructure agreement are working to close out their final disagreements this week and begin drafting the text of the agreement. Ten of the Senators announced with Mr. Biden last month that they had struck an infrastructure deal, though efforts to wrap it up it have hit hurdles among some skeptical Republicans.
