Mr Patel called for a national plan to be put in place urgently, saying schools need a social distancing decision before plans can be made. The government has stated that its current goal is for all pupils to return to their classrooms in September. Health Secretary Matt Hancock admitted just this week it is still uncertain if that will happen.
Mr Patel has joined growing calls for the social distancing rule to be reduced to 1m, arguing that with staggered lunchtimes and one-way systems, this will make it possible for more schools to bring back all or most pupils. He has suggested schools be given a series of scenarios to plan around, depending on infection rates, reiterating that preparations have to start 'as soon as possible'.
