A revised policy by the Sydney diocese says its school principals must be “of Christian faith and character” and be “actively involved” in a Bible-based church.
previously attempted to have the national church affirm that marriage is only between a man and a womanUnder the diocese’s new governance “exposure draft” published last week, Anglican schools and organisations are assigned to one of four “tiers”, depending on the requirements that the church places on them.
The new policy says schools should be run following the “doctrines, tenets and beliefs of the diocese”, but certain rules, including that principals are “of Christian faith and character” apply only to Tiers 3 and 4 schools. The diocese’s “exposure draft” says there will be more “consistency and certainty” for the role of the Archbishop in its schools and organisations, including being able to visit and inspect premises.Trinity Grammar headmaster Tim Bowden said he welcomed the consultation with schools, including on the marriage clause, noting “they have responded to the feedback that we’ve given”.
“They are taking advantage of laws that allow them to discriminate by defining their own rules, dressing them up as religious requirements, and firing or refusing to hire anyone who doesn’t agree with their prejudiced beliefs about LGBTQ+ people,” Kassisieh said.
