Most Australian high schools start the day by 9am but a sleep researcher says pushing the morning bell back later could have some major benefits for teenagers' health.

"Chronically tired" teenagers could benefit from later school start times as sleep deprivation puts their health at risk, according to a clinical psychologist and researcher.

At Adelaide High School, start times move from 8:30am for years seven-10 to 9:20am for years 11 and 12."That buffer of 50 minutes means you can come to school if you want, and do some schoolwork, but you're not really obliged to unless you need it," he said. "We know that when kids are given a later start time, they sleep later and they keep their bedtime the same.

"It's not really about how long the day is or how many lessons you have, it's more about how much of the information you actually remember."
